Support and Self-help Groups

Aflið provides counseling to victims of violence and their relatives.

Aflið is an organization that helps people who have experienced any kind of violence. It's possible to get both individual counseling and participate in group activities. Relatives are welcome. There is no cost for using Aflið's services.

In individual sessions, support is provided. Aflið's philosophy is based on trauma-informed and victim-centered service. Within this philosophy, counselors are aware of the prevalence of trauma and the effects that trauma and difficult experiences have on individuals' functioning. The goal of trauma-informed service is not to work with the traumas themselves but to work with the individual's difficulties and challenges that have arisen due to trauma. All of Aflið's counselors are university-educated individuals with diverse backgrounds.

There is no elevator in the building, so if you use a wheelchair, you might not be able to enter. In that case, you can book an appointment with a counselor at another location that you can access with your wheelchair. You can speak Icelandic or English with the counselors. If a language interpreter or sign language interpreter is needed, it's best to let them know in advance.

Aflið is located at Aðalstræti 14 in Akureyri. Services are also provided in Blönduós, Egilsstaðir, Húsavík, Reyðarfjörður, and Siglufjörður. You can book an appointment by calling 461 5959 from 9 to 13 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays or by sending an email to aflidak@aflidak.is. You can also book an appointment at www.noona.is/aflid.
